The University Students’ Association of Ghana (USAG) has welcomed the proposed scholarship policy of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for yet to be admitted freshly admitted university students.
In a statement released by the group, they commended both parties for thinking about the future of Ghana’s youth.
“USAG welcomes these novel and impressive policies from both parties and commends them for being definite and insightful about the future of the Ghanaian youth in putting through their future dreams and aspiration.”
The NPP has set aside an estimated amount of GHS20 million to cater for 15,000 beneficiaries for the 2020/2021 academic year.
This is a budgeted expenditure for the government’s tertiary scholarship programme for the first graduates of the Free Senior High School (SHS)
The National Democratic Congress has also promised to absorb in full the fees of all students who will be admitted to tertiary institutions in 2021 as well as absorb half fees of continuing students.
According to NDC, the policy, dubbed “fa ninyinaa”, was a recommendation by the party’s Education Policy Group which has been accepted and incorporated into its 2020 election manifesto.
USAG noted that these policies will lessen the financial burden on parents of tertiary students.
“The policy proposals of both the governing New Patriotic Party and the opposition National Democratic Party to lessen the monetary burden on parents of tertiary students; in absorbing the tuition fees for freshly admitted University students who graduated under the free SHS policy,” they noted.
