The United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for West Africa and the Sahel, Mohammed Ibn Chambas says a peaceful election in December will further strengthen the constitutional democracy in the sub-region and beyond.
Speaking in Kumasi on the sidelines of a stakeholders’ forum to promote peaceful elections in Ghana, Mr. Ibn Chambas stated that the United Nations is observing processes leading to the 2020 polls, but it is also committed to supporting Ghana to conduct peaceful elections.
He added that Ghanaians should make it a point to advocate for peace during the elections.
“In spite of increased tensions associated with the electoral process, it is important for us to guard against activities that will incite violence. We must desist from the politics of acrimony, bitterness, and rancour that undermine peaceful conduct of the election.
“Indeed, we should continue to engage political actors to ensure that they practice issue-based politics, a common attitude of Ghanaian electoral competition,” he stated
