Accra: Four children die in fire incident at Fise

The Ghana Fire Service says it has begun investigations into the cause of a fire outbreak that led to the death of four children at Fise, a suburb of Amasaman in the Greater Accra region.

The children were unable to escape from their three-bedroom apartment when the fire started.

This is because they had been locked up by their mother, who at the time of the incident was attending a church service.

“What actually happened was that she did not inform any of her neighbours about her children being at home before she left for church and the place was locked up so the children couldn’t come out.”

Speaking to Citi News, the Head of Public Relations at the Fire Service, Ellis Robbinson Okoe said that the lives of the children would have been spared if the room was not locked.

“It happened around Latesha Hotel. We had a distress call that there was a fire at Amasaman and when we got to the scene we realized that three out of six-bedroom self contain houses had been burnt by the fire. Our men were able to douse the fire. They realized that 4 children were in there but had all passed away.”

Mr. Okoe appealed to parents to be cautious of such happenings and try to inform their neighbours if they have to leave their children home alone.

“We have started investigations to know the cause of the fire, but we want to advise parents that if they are leaving the house, especially those who live in compound houses if you have to leave your children, try to inform other tenants before you leave,” he said.
