Kanye West Seems to Threaten Legal Action Against Sony & Universal, Shares Text Message Screen Grab

Kanye West seems to be continuing his Twitter rant from last night, where he said that he won’t release new music with Sony and Universal until he is released from his rec ord contract.

Now, he posted a text message between him and presumably a lawyer or someone with intimate knowledge of his contract with Sony and Universal.

Based on this text message screen grab, it appears as if Kanye is considering legal action against Sony and Universal. It also appears that owning his masters is a huge part of the conversation here, which is something that Taylor Swift recently went through when Scooter Braun bought hers. Taylor is mentioned in these texts.

“Meaning that we can argue that Universal and Sony have not supported you fully. And that as a result they have breached. This is the lawsuit/termination nuclear option. If we went that route we would litigate and ask for your masters as part of a settlement. This is a high risk but high reward strategy,” an unidentified person, presumably a lawyer, wrote to Kanye in a text posted on Tuesday (September 15). “Re masters ownership we can look into buying. But if Taylor’s cost $300 million yours would cost a lot more I assume. Remember that if you re-recorded these songs you could own these new masters outright.”

The person continued, “A much more radical consideration would be to propose an entirely new relationship or joint venture with Universal. One this is equal and not one sided. I am not sure you are interested in that. But if could be a Yeezy Media/Universal joint venture play but one where you have the power.”

Kanye also said hours before, “My kids gonna own my masters.”
