Former Central Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Bernard Allotey Jacobs has said in an interview monitored by MyNewsGh.com that he is happy with the action of Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA).
“I strongly support GUTA with their actions, but they need to do them devoid of violence,” he said.
Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Jacobs said he does support GUTA of their action but care must be taken.
He added that the recent clash between Nigerian and Ghanaian traders in Accra is gradually creating tension between both sides and could trigger counter-attacks on Ghanaian traders in Nigeria.
Mr. Jacobs’ comment follows a series of actions taken by GUTA to stop Nigerians from trading within the retail space, most of it involving the forceful closure of their shops.
Ghanaian traders feel foreigners, particularly Nigerians, Chinese and Lebanese have taken over retail businesses in the country, contrary to the law which prohibits them from engaging in a retail business.
