DJ Arafat has sadly passed away at the age of 33.
The Ivorian DJ and singer – also known as Ange Didier Houon and Arafat Muana – in “Shangaï” on Princess Street made music in the Coupé-Décalé genre.
He was reportedly killed due to injuries sustained in a motorbike accident, CNN reports.
“He was involved in an accident in the Angre neighborhood and later died in hospital,” Yves Jay Jay confirmed on Monday (August 12). “He died at 8:10 am this morning. He was Ivory Coast’s best musician.”
Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara wrote on Facebook, “It is with great sadness that I learned of the premature passing of Houon Ange Didier ‘DJ Arafat‘ Youth Icon and ambassador for Ivorian music and culture. I extend my sincere condolences to his mother, his children, his biological and artistic families as well as to all his fans. My prayers are with them during this painful ordeal.”
DJ Arafat was dubbed the “King of Coupé-Décalé,” a “flamboyant and brash music style meaning ‘to cheat someone and run away’ in Ivorian slang,” according to the outlet.
