As part of activities marking World Jollof Day for the year 2019, Onga Ghana will host a competition with Onga Nigeria in settling a friendly rivalry to determine which of the two West African countries cooks Jollof better.
The event is scheduled to take place o the 24th of August 2019 at the Crystal park Gardeb in East Legon.
Onga Ghana, one of the leading food seasoning brands last Friday successfully held a Jollof Cooking competition at their head office at North Industrial area to choose the Ghanaian representative for the competition.
24-year-old aspiring chef, Ms. Sika Mortoo, won the maiden edition of the Onga Ghana Jollof Battle and is set to represent Ghana in the upcoming Ghana-Nigeria cooking challenge with $2,000 at stake.
The competition saw 8 selected finalists, picked from social media battled out their culinary skills to win the bid to represent Ghana at the upcoming Ghana versus Nigeria cooking competition.
According to Promasidor Ghana Limited, producers of Onga food seasoning, the competition presents a unique opportunity for Onga to reinforce its position as the premier food seasoning in Ghana.
“As the market leader in the area of food seasoning, Onga has continuously provided unique brand experiences to patrons and consumers. As people across Africa and the world at large, we celebrate World Jollof day and Onga your choice of spice in the preparation of Jollof is joining in the celebration by organizing a cooking contest dubbed the Onga Jollof battle” Brand manager for Onga Ghana, Linda Nartey said.
The contestants presented their prepared dishes to a four-member judging panel comprising Chef Joe Ansah, Chef Maxwell Odun Anakwa, Mary Oseku-Afful, and Theodora Naa Suma Anokye.
The panel stated that they awarded Sika 83% marks based on the presentation, taste, appearance, neatness and her use of time.
Gladys Kafui (72%) and Selorm Gakpey (68%) came second and third respectively.
Explaining why Sika won the contest, Judge Oseku-Afful, a lecturer at the Hotel, Catering and Institutional Management Department at the Accra Technical University disclosed that her innovative use of a carrot puree and her presentation gave her the winning taste.
“We were looking out for innovation because we knew that all of them could cook Jollof. Actually, there was a tie between Sika and Gladys in terms of taste but Sika’s dish was richer because of her use of ingredients.”
