Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has cut sod for construction works to begin on a state of the art sports complex for the Ghana Armed Forces in Tamale, Northern Region.
The sports complex under the Commander-In-Chief Sports Center Project is expected to be completed in April 2020.
Dr. Bawumia at the ceremony at the Sixth Garrison in Tamale, indicated the project which is the first of sports complex to be constructed by government in fulfillment of a promise made by President Akufo-Addo to the military in October last year.
“This project is in line with government’s strategy to transform the security services into a world class security institution with modern infrastructure including accommodation, health and training facilities,” he remarked.
The 20 million cedis edifice will boast of a standard size football pitch with sub soil drainage system, 400 meter hockey pitch, spectator stands, tartan track, a standard size lawn tennis court, a combined basketball and volleyball court, a gymnasium for indoor games and other activities.
The Vice President also stated that government is determined to revive the sports activities in the country at all levels “to reclaim past glory and attain relevance in the global sporting fraternity”.
He also assured the chiefs and people of the Northern Region of government’s support to develop the Tamale Metropolis into a major commercial and tourism hub.
Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia revealed that government will cut sod for the commencement of construction works on a first class terminal for the Tamale Airport in June this year.
The Defense Minister Dominic Nitiwul who presented an ambulance to the Garrison 6, is hopeful the project will increase the rapport between the Ghana Armed Forces and other security services through sports.
He revealed that the project is being financed by Ghana National Lotteries and the Government of Ghana.
“The National Lottery has invested a seed money of 15 million Ghana cedis,” he announced.
